What started back in 1995 in the small town of Mount Shasta, California, has grown to be one of the biggest franchised restaurants serving the Western side of the United States. You can find plenty of good Southern homestyle cooking at Black Bear Diner. ![]() Players, there are 4 Pokéstops here.12 Things to Know About Black Bear Diner Credit: Black Bear Diner There are three wood carved bears and outside a typical Salinas farm mural with a Bear driving a tractor. I have been here twice in a week and the food and service was consistent. The sausage, gravy and scrambled egg over a split biscuit is delicious. The flavor was spot on and will satisfy anyone’s hunger. I’ve had both and it’s a hard choice between them. For those with large appetites, they have a huge chicken fried steak smothered in gravy with eggs and choice of hash browns(shaved pieces in lieu of shredded) or diced red potatoes(with sautéed onions and bell peppers). The biscuits are huge and pair well with the gravy. was great with large portions, luckily they have a lighter menu for those wanting less food. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the quick service. Needless to say, we avoided this restaurant for the remainder of our stay in Salinas (Olive Garden was delicious but take out only). The so called "apple cobbler" was basically applesauce with pie crust on top (disgusting). We held out hope that they would redeem themselves with dessert but, alas, we were even more disappointed. The vegetable medley consisted of some sort of mushy squash and peppers. The turkey dinners were slathered with gravy, perhaps to hide the unsavory meat. ![]() Now for our meals.what can I say? Well, maybe mediocre at best. We were also informed that they had shade covers but they kept breaking and "corporate" refuses to replace them. We asked our server to turn down the music but were told "corporate" controls the volume so they couldn't turn it down. Unfortunately, that's the only good news about this restaurant.īecause of Covid-19 guidelines, we had to eat outside, which we were fine with, except for the blaring music. Moreīlack Bear Diner moved from their Laurel Inn location (other side of highway) to a nicer area. They seemed to have plenty of staff so it appears management at the front of the restaurant was at fault. The waiter in the area was clearly frustrated as he was losing tip money from poor turnover of tables. Two groups in front of us declined that table so eventually we were seated- at least twenty minutes after it was cleaned and set up. Then there were two booths where eventually a group of four and a group of two were seated. One was for larger groups (a family of 4 was placed there). At least three tables were available for 15 to 20 minutes in the area we would be eventually seated in. What was really frustrating is that we could see tables being freed up, cleaned and sitting empty for significant amounts of time. Which was a pain since we were traveling about 300 miles and were about half way. Without question, this was our least favorite experience. And good service by the waiters/waitresses.
